Biography

Matthew Jukes is a journalist, author, wine buyer, lecturer and wine judge. He has been the wine correspondent for the Daily Mail since 1999 and he also writes a weekly column for MoneyWeek, a monthly column for The Week and occasional features for Decanter Magazine. He is responsible for the wine lists at several top London restaurants including Bibendum Restaurant, Chutney Mary, Amaya and Veeraswamy as well as the private wine club Quintessentially Wine worldwide.
He is one of the world's leading experts on Australian wine and each year compiles his '100 Best Australian Wines' list and he takes the wine on the 100 Best Roadshow around the UK. He also runs an annual competition in Australia to find 'The Great Australian Red', created with Tyson Stelzer to find the best Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz wine – 'the blend that defines Australia'.
Matthew writes his annual Pinot Noir classification, 'The Great New Zealand Pinot Noir Classification' also in collaboration with Tyson Stelzer.
He regularly lectures and runs masterclass tastings for both corporate and private clients.

Career history

Matthew started his career in the wine industry in 1987 working with wine consultant James Rogers at the Barnes Wine Shop, London SW13. From there, Matthew moved into buying for Bibendum Restaurant & Oyster Bar, London SW3, winning awards for his wine list, and then into radio when journalism became started to become his focus. After 3 years on a weekly radio slot for the BBC, Channel 4 approached Matthew to host 'Wine Hunt'. Matthew then went on to write 'The Wine Book' which was later serialised by the Daily Mail and due to the popularity of the book, Matthew was offered the chance to write the most widely read wine column in the UK in the Daily Mail's Weekend Magazine, with over 5 million readers each week.

Awards

In January 2012, Matthew Jukes was awarded the Honorary Australian of the Year Award by the Australia Day Foundation. It recognises a non Australian resident of the UK who displays "Australian characteristics" or has contributed significantly to Australia.

In May 2011, Off Licence News voted Matthew the most influential wine writer in the UK.

His book, Taste Food & Wine, co-written with Tyson Stelzer, won the Australian Food Media Award for Best Food and Writing.

In 2002, Matthew won the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition’s Trophy for Wine Communicator of the Year.

Accomplishments

Matthew is a keen supporter of homeless charities around the world. He is the Patron and Founder of Touch Wine, an organisation that raises money for the homeless charity the Hutt St Centre in Adelaide, South Australia.

The concept has inspired sister projects in Victoria (Wine Rules), New South Wales (Touch Life)and most recently in Canberra with Touch Vinnie-Yard. It has also gone global, with Ireland hosting its first Touch Wine event in 2009. Matthew has also been approached about taking Touch Wine to South Africa, New Zealand and the UK in the next few years.

Bringing together two of Matthew's greatest passions, rugby and wine, he has so far raised $800,000 AUD for charity.
