Early life and education

Matt Bomer was born as Matthew Staton Bomer on October 11, 1977, in Webster Groves, Greater St. Louis, Missouri, to Elizabeth Macy (née Staton) and John O'Neill Bomer IV, a Dallas Cowboys draft pick who played for the team from 1972 to 1974. He has a sister, Megan Bomer, and a brother, Neill Bomer, who is an engineer.

Bomer grew up in Spring, Texas, a suburb of Houston, and attended its Klein High School, where he was a classmate of future actors Lee Pace and Lynn Collins. Pace and Bomer both acted at Houston's Alley Theatre, a non-profit theatre company.

After graduating from his high school in 1996, he enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2001. In 1999, while going through his bachelor's education, he spent a year living in Galway, Ireland working as a bartender.

Career

After finishing his education at Carnegie Mellon University, Bomer moved to New York City and worked on stage. He made his screen debut in December 2000, playing the part of "Ian Kipling" in an episode of the TV series All My Children. In 2002, he had a minor role in an episode of Relic Hunter. In the same year, he landed the recurring role of "Ben Reade" on the daytime television soap opera, Guiding Light. He was seen in 7 seven episodes of the series in 2002-03.

In 2003-04, Bomer starred in the TV series Tru Calling, a supernatural, science-fiction television series on the Fox television network. He was seen in 18 episodes of the series, playing "Luc Johnston", an ill-fated love interest of Tru Davies (played by Eliza Dushku).

Bomer appeared on North Shore (2004–05), a primetime television soap opera, as well as in Robert Schwentke's Flightplan (2005), a thriller film with Jodie Foster and Peter Sarsgaard. In the slasher film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning(2006), Bomer portrayed "Eric," a Vietnam War veteran who is driving across Texas to re-enlist after his brother is drafted. The production of The Normal Heart broke for a few months while he was on a diet. Bomer's performance was praised by a reviewer for The Hollywood Reporter, who considered his as the highlight of the production. Matthew Gilbert of The Boston Globe noticed that Bomer is: "quite simply, devastating in this movie, his beauty adding resonance because it begins to fade so suddenly, as his cheeks protrude and lesions gather." Gilbert also praised the chemistry between Bomer and Ruffalo stating, "is among the movie's strengths, too, as it provides the core of love and compassion amid all the acrimony." For his work on the film, Bomer received his first Golden Globe Award in the Best Supporting Actor category and his first Primetime Emmy Awards nomination.
