Biography
The Master of the Codex of Saint George (active circa 1330-1335) is an unknown painter, likely Florentine but active in France, named after an illuminated missal found in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Vatican City.
The Master of the Codex of Saint George appears to have spent time in Avignon, home of the papal court from 1309 to 1377, where he assimilated characteristics of Sienese and French paintings of the period. It is suspected a Crucifixion and a Lamentation present at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City is part of a folding polyptych probably once composed of six panels, which included a Resurrection and a Coronation of the Virgin now at the Museo Nazionale del Bargello, Florence.
