Biography

Marcus Junius Rufus was a Roman Politician of the Roman Empire, who lived in the 1st century. Rufus was a member of the ancient, noble and politician influential Junius (gens).
Rufus in 94, during the reign of Roman Emperor Domitian, was appointed as Prefect of Egypt. He was a prefect of Egypt from 94 until 98. During his time in Egypt he married a prominent Egyptian Greek woman called Claudia Capitolina, who was the daughter Equestrian Magistrate, Astrologer and Scholar Tiberius Claudius Balbilus.
Rufus married Capitolina as her second husband, as Captiolina’s first husband Greek Prince of Commagene Gaius Julius Archelaus Antiochus Epiphanes had died in Athens, Greece in 92. Through her first marriage, Rufus became a stepfather to Captiolina’s children who were: son Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos and daughter Julia Balbilla.
In October 98 during the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan, Rufus’ time as prefect of Egypt was over and he was replaced. After this moment, nothing is known on Rufus.
