Biography

Laura Pidcock (born 19 August 1987) is a British Labour Party politician, who has been the Member of Parliament for North West Durham since the 2017 snap election. Before entering parliament, she was a mental health support worker and worked within the education team at anti-racism charity, Show Racism the Red Card. Previously, Pidcock was a councillor on Northumberland County Council until losing her seat in 2017.

Parliamentary career

Only weeks prior to the 2017 UK general election, Pidcock was selected to stand for Labour in the safe Labour seat of North West Durham, when the previous MP, Pat Glass stood down.

She has declared herself to be a feminist. In her maiden speech, she said that the Palace of Westminster dated from "a time when my class and my sex would have been denied a place in it, because we are deemed unworthy". In August 2017, Pidcock announced that she would not engage socially with any Conservative MPs as she considers them to "be the enemy" and said that her dislike of them was "visceral". After criticism, she affirmed a commitment to "represent everyone regardless of who they voted for".
