Biography

Karel Jonckheere (Ostend, 9 April 1906 – Rijmenam, 13 December 1993) was a Flemish writer. Karel Jonckheere was also a world traveler, he visited Cuba, Mexico, the United States, Congo, South Africa, India, Romania, the Balkans and many West-European countries. His journeys were a source of inspiration for his poems and novels.

Education

He went to school at the Royal Athenaeum of Ostend, where he attended the scientific high school (humaniora). Afterwards high school he went to Ghent and attended the Rijksmiddelbare Normaalschool to become a teacher for secondary education (Germanic languages).

Career

He started his professional career as a clerk in Oostende. In 1929, he started his career as a teacher, first at the secondary school of Gembloers, then in 1930, at Nieuwpoort and finally in 1944, in Ghent. In 1945, he was for a while secretary of the Belgian minister of internal affairs, and in the same year he became director of the Rijksmiddelbare School (E: state high school) in Veurne. In 1946, he was appointed inspector of the public libraries. In 1953, he became employed as a civil servant at the Ministry of National Education and Culture.
