Biography
Karan Choudharyis an actor and filmmaker. Originally from Faridabad, India, Choudhary is presently based in New York. He has done modeling and TV work, and is primarily known for his award-winning short films, which include Dedication (2017), New York'd (2018), and The Timepiece (2019).
Personal life
Choudhary "was born the youngest child in a close-knit family in Faridabad, India." Prior to his move to New York to pursue acting and filmmaking, he worked as a model in Mumbai and studied theater. In 2013, he moved to New York after being accepted to the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, where he studied the Sanford Meisner technique of acting.
Choudhary has stated that he learned to speak English on the job while working at a retail store in New Delhi.
In an interview, Choudhary has also stated his personal interests include: learning foreign languages and musical instruments, playing sports, and cooking.
Career
Choudhary has appeared in numerous domestic and international commercials for brands such as Budweiser, Stella Artois, Absolut, Perrier, and NYU.
Early Career and Dedication
After leaving the Neighborhood Playhouse in 2015, Choudhary began his working career as an actor. He began making short films in 2017, beginning with the short documentary Dedication. The film was well-received at global film festivals, including the Jaipur International Film Festival, Glendale International Film Festival, and Sydney Lift-Off Film Festival. It was nominated for four awards and won two.
New York'd
In 2018, he created the narrative short film New York'd, which was accepted by over twenty five film festivals globally, including VOB Film Festival and NewFilmmakers Film Festival. It received eight nominations and five wins in various categories.
A review in Indie Shorts Mag called New York'd a "hilarious play out of every city dweller's life," and praised the film's performances, novelty, and execution. The film was, reportedly, a 14-page script and was shot all in one day. The short was inspired by a story of "how a particularly wonderful day turned into a nightmare by an unforeseen chain of events that could really only happen in New York City." The film is also inspired by Choudhary's experiences after moving to New York.
The Timepiece
In 2019, Choudhary created his third short film, The Timepiece, Which has been accepted in many film festivals globally, including DTLA Film Festival, Ojai Film Festival, The Short Film Awards, Lancaster International Short Film Festival, and Moondance International Film Festival.
The Timepiece, is "a story of an unlikely friendship between two people from different cultures, different generations and different sexual orientations." On The Timepiece, Choudhary has commented, "At its core, the film is about how people judge one another based on their appearance, sexuality, and cultural differences."
