Biography

Kane Easterbrook (born 23 June 1988) is a New Zealand ice hockey player currently playing for the Dunedin Thunder in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League. He is also a member of the New Zealand national ice hockey team.

Playing career

Easterbrook first signed with the Botany Swarm of the New Zealand Ice Hockey League (NZIHL) in 2006. He joined the team as the third goalie and did not play a game during that season. The following season he competed in one game, acting as backup goaltender for Zak Nothling. The Swarm went on to win the 2007 NZIHL playoffs, earning Easterbrook his first NZIHL Championship.

Easterbrook continued to play for the Swarm until 2010, winning the NZIHL Championship again in 2008 and 2010. He trained and played Junior A Tier 2 in Canada in the regions of Alberta, Quebec and Ontario for the years of 2008-2011.

In 2011 he moved to Australia and signed with the Gold Coast Blue Tongues of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL). During his first season in the AIHL, he competed in six games and finished with a save percentage of 0.844. He remained with the Blue Tongues for the 2012 AIHL season; however, he did not play with the team. The management staff then decided to use three other goaltenders for their games as a result of Easterbrook pulling out for the season.

In 2013 he was called back to the NZIHL once again after a year off from playing, to be signed with the Southern Stampede (NZIHL) as the starting goaltender. Easterbrook and the team were unsuccessful in obtaining the NZIHL cup. After posting a career playing challenge he was then obtained as an equal playing time goalie by the Dunedin Thunder for the 2014 season. During the 2014 season, Easterbrook split the starting rights with fellow partner Matt Canaday. Dunedin Thunder made it to the grand final after completing the season at 2nd in the league, however they lost the grand final in game two of a three-game series. Easterbrook's achievement for the year would see him gather at least a shutout for the last three seasons in the NZIHL and also three versus the same team at the rivals' same home venue.

Easterbrook was first called up to represent New Zealand in 2012, when he joined the national senior team to compete in the 2012 IIHF World Championship Division II Group A held in Reykjavík, Iceland. New Zealand finished last and were relegated to Division II Group B for the following year, while Easterbrook finished the tournament with a save percentage of 0.844. Playing in Div2.A would pose to be a challenge as the Ice Blacks did not have the strongest team possible nor the original chosen. Easterbrook's first game of the world championship versus Iceland was a loss 4-0, with a shots on of 43 to the Ice Blacks' 6. This level of opponents would continue until the end of the tournament.

Personal life

Easterbrook was born on 23 June 1988, Auckland, New Zealand.
