Biography
John Menzies Low, CBE, CEng, (b. 1 July 1953) is the Chief Executive of the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and an independent member of the House of Lords Appointments Commission. Low is also the Chairman of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO). He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2008 for services to the voluntary sector and to deaf people.
Education and career
Low holds a PhD in bio-medical physics and, before joining the CAF, was Chief Executive of the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID). His early career was spent in research and development in the scientific field. Prior to becoming involved in the voluntary sector, he was Director of Research and Development at Swiss technology company Sortex. He held this post between 1988 and 1999 when he became a Director of the RNID, eventually becoming its Chief Executive.
