Biography

Hon. John Douglas of Broughton (c. 1698 – 16 March 1732) was the second son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of March.
He was Member of Parliament for Peebleshire between 1722 and 1732.
Following the death of his brother William, 2nd Earl of March, in 1731, John Douglas was appointed guardian to his seven-year-old nephew, William, 3rd Earl of March, who was later to become 4th Duke of Queensberry. However, John Douglas of Broughton died, unmarried, the following year.
He had, in 1719, purchased the estate of Broughton, but he was so deeply in debt that, following his death in 1732, it had to be sold to pay his creditors.
