Biography

Dr John Alexander Loraine FRSE FRCPE FIB (1924-1988) was a Scottish physician and endrocrinologist. He wrote widely on human sexuality.

Life

He was born in Edinburgh on 14 May 1924 the son of Lachlan Dempster Loraine and his wife, Ruth Jack. He was educated at George Watson's College then studied Medicine at Edinburgh University graduating MB ChB. He did further postgraduate studies, specialising in sexuality and gained both a PhD and DSc.

In 1947 he joined the staff of the Clinical Endrocrinology Research Unit. He was promoted to Assistant Director in 1958 and Director in 1961. In 1972 he joined the staff of Edinburgh University lecturing in Community Medicine. In 1978 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Anne McLaren, Roger Valentine Short, Aubrey Manning, Douglas Scott Falconer and H John Evans.

He died in Edinburgh on 14 November 1988.
