Biography

Joe Gallagher (born 30 November 1968 in Manchester) is a British former amateur boxer. He became an amateur boxing coach in 1993 before joining the professional ranks as a trainer in 2001.

Amateur career

Gallagher started boxing at age 11 at Wythenshawe Forum ABC under the guidance of Jimmy Egan. At age 17 he boxed for Moss Side ABC where he was trained by Phil Martin. Gallagher had over 60 amateur bouts.

Amateur coaching

In 1993, after a successful professional camp under tutor Phil Martin, Gallagher became an amateur coach at Moss Side ABC, Benchill ABC, Nicholls Police ABC and Shannons ABC. Gallagher produced Champions in all National Amateur Competitions - including Schoolboy, Junior ABA, NABC, Novice and Senior ABA titles. His notable students included:

  • Levi Tute—Schoolboy title in his first season and England Honours
  • Scott Mann NABC
  • John Murray—schoolboy title after only 7 fights
  • Owen Trainor—two ABA finals at different weights
  • Joe Murray—Bronze medal in the World championships in 2007 and represented Team GB at the 2008 Olympics
  • Steve Foster, Jr—back to back ABA title's in 2000 and 2001 and quarter finals at the World championships
  • Hosea Burton—2009 ABA Middleweight Champion,
  • Zac Burton—2010 Junior ABA Champ gold medalist 4 nations .

Professional coaching

Joe Became the first ever winner of the UK boxing news Trainer of the season 2014- 2015 then became USA Ring Magazine 2015 Trainer of the year. Gallagher turned pro in 2001 after Foster had won his 2nd ABA title and finished a quarter finalist at the World Championships. Gallagher was in the corner for Foster's professional debut. Gallagher's first success was when Eddie Nevins won the Central Area title. He then guided John Murray to the WBC Youth title in 2005, English title in 2006 and British title in 2007.

Gallagher took over Billy Graham's old gym in Denton in September 2008, sponsored by CNP. He trained Former British Heavyweight Champion Michael Holden, European middleweight champion Matthew Macklin, European & British lightweight champion John Murray, 2008 Olympian Joe Murray, English Super Feather Champion Anthony Crolla, Mark Heffron, Femi Fehintola, Danny Randall Liam Cullen, Hosea Burton and Zak Burton. Gallagher pens a weekly column in the Manchester Evening News. In 2011 Joe Gallagher's fighters took him to a 49–0 winning streak.

Gallaghers Gym relocated to Gloves Community centre in Bolton owned by Amir Khan.

Since then the stable has grown and went on an unbeaten run of 62 fights before coming to an end in Germany when Paul Smith Jnr lost a close decision in a World title fight with Champion Arthur Abraham in 2014.

  • WBA Lightweight Champion Anthony Crolla
  • WBA Regular Super Bantam Champion Scott Quigg
  • WBO LT Middle World Champion Liam Beefy Smith .

There has been British titles for The Smith Brothers Stephen, Paul, Liam and Callum along with Scotty Cardle & Hosea Burton. Callum Johnson and Marcus Morrison all continue to rise up the ranks.

Joe Gallagher was voted Ring Magazine & UK boxing trainer of the year in 2015

He was also short listed by The Ring Magazine for trainer of the year in 2014 .
