James Vincent Pryor (born 1968) is an American philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at New York University. He is known for his expertise on epistemology and philosophy of language. Starting in July 2020, Pryor will be Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
A paper by Prof. Pryor, entitled What’s Wrong With Moore’s Argument? was published in Philosophical Issues, 14, Epistemology, 2004. The paper, which is 30 pages long and contains references to numerous sources, is a critique of G.E. Moore’s 1939 paper entitled Proof of an External World. Prof. Pryor’s paper does not mention Ludwig Wittgenstein’s comments regarding Moore’s argument. Wittgenstein’s comments are found in his work published, posthumously, in 1969 entitled “On Certainty”.
