Biography

James Jeffries (1836-1910) was the 20th Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana from 1888 to 1892 serving under Governor Francis T. Nicholls.

Early life

James Jeffries (1836-1910)was born in Kentucky but was in Washington County Texas in 1859 when he married Annie Munsen (Munson). He is listed in the 1860 Census of Milam county as a lawyer and was the trustee/guardian for Annie's two siblings.Annie J. Jeffries, wife of James Jeffries, Jr. died in Cameron, Milam County, Texas on 26 May 1861. James then served as a private in Co F of the 8th TX Infantry C.S.A. during the Civil War. He was later a member of Gen. Leroy Stafford Camp #3 of the United Confederate Veterans. On 27 July 1865 in Alexandria, Louisiana, he married Mary E (or Lillie) Meade, daughter of Stephen Meade of Avoca Plantation near Alexandria.James Jeffries is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Alexandria, Caddo Parish, Louisiana.

Political career

Jeffries was a supporter of the Nicholls faction of the Louisiana Democratic Party. In 1888 Jeffries ran and was elected Lieutenant Governor. He also served as a Member of the Democratic National Committee from Louisiana during that period.
