Bye was born in the Aston district of Birmingham. He played for Shirley Juniors before joining Birmingham in May 1937, turning professional later that year. He made his debut in the First Division on 28 January 1939 in a 5–0 defeat at Preston North End, and played in the first three games of the 1939–40 season, which was then abandoned when the Second World War started.
