Biography
Iuri Akobia (Georgian: იური აკობია, 20 May 1937, Anaklia - 5 November 2014) was a Georgian composer of chess endgame studies and chess problems. For most of his working life he was a radio communications engineer in the National Center for Radio and TV of Georgia, and was Chief Engineer from 1975 until 1996.

Iuri Akobia died of prostate cancer. In the evening, after working on his Homepage he suddenly became very dizzy. The rescue was called immediately, but there was nothing left for him to do.
He died shortly afterwards. People from all over the world mourned the loss of this composer, who did a great deal for the composition of the endgame study.
The best study which he made was the 1st prize in World Cup 2010, with the solution: 1.Rf8+ Kd7 2.Sb6+ Ke7 3.Rf4 Re2+ 4.R:e4+ R:e4 5.Sd5+ Kf8 6.Bd6+ Kg7 7.B:g3 a4 8.Ka1 a3 9.Bh7 Rd4 10.Be5+ wins

International master Iuri Akobia was a very helpful person who worked intensively on the chess composition. He also created chess problems, but his area of greatest success was endgame studies. He worked with many well-known study composers at home like (GM) Gurgenidze, but also with the American Richard Becker (GM), and a number of others known composers. You can still visit his homepage. His homepage about devoted for chess studies was by far the best website on the Internet. He also organized numerous tournaments on his website and was activ an International judge himself for many years. Iuri Akobia did a lot for the chess composition and became International master of the FIDE for chess composition in 2013 only 1 year before his death. Also you can find many photos about other chess composer´s on his site. Iuri Akobia will always be remembered for the chess world! http://akobiachess.myweb.ge/...
