Biography

Israel Roll (1937 - June 2010) was an Israeli archaeologist and academic. He was the former director of the Apollonia-Arsuf excavations, and one of the directors of the excavations of the Roman Temple at Kedesh. He was currently retired from Tel Aviv University. He completed his bachelor's degree in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. His Ph.D. thesis on the cult of Mithras, on which he wrote an article, is from the Sorbonne. The current director of the excavationat Apollonia-Arsuf, Dr. Oren Tal is currently in an ongoing effort to publish the last seasons of the excavation.

The Roman roads in Judea

Roll was a leading authority on classical archaeology, specializing in the Roman road system in Judea and the adjacent provinces. The Roman Road Survey was directed and published by Prof. Roll, Prof. Benjamin Isaac and Prof. Moshe Fischer. The first publication describes the Legio - Scythopolis road.

The second publication, describing the Jaffa- Jerusalem roads, was published in 1996.
