Hugh Judson Kilpatrick

Hugh Judson Kilpatrick was a career United States Army officer who served as a brigadier general during the American Civil War. He is best known for his controversial leadership of the Union cavalry during the Atlanta Campaign.

During the Atlanta Campaign, Kilpatrick commanded the Union cavalry division that was tasked with disrupting Confederate supply lines and communication networks. His aggressive tactics and willingness to take risks earned him the nickname "Kill-Cavalry."

Kilpatrick's leadership was controversial because he was known for his reckless disregard for the lives of his men. His aggressive and often ill-conceived tactics led to unnecessary casualties and setbacks. He was also accused of using his position for personal gain, including looting and burning civilian property.

Despite his controversial leadership, Kilpatrick left a lasting impact on the Union Army. He played a key role in the destruction of the Confederate cavalry led by General Joseph Wheeler, which weakened the Confederate war effort during the Atlanta Campaign. Kilpatrick's aggressive tactics also set the stage for the eventual Union victory in Atlanta.

After the Civil War, Kilpatrick remained in the military and served in various posts, including as the U.S. Minister to Chile. He later became involved in politics and held a number of government positions. He died in 1881 and was buried in West Point Cemetery.
