Heather Heying

Heather Heying (born April 26, 1969) is an American evolutionary biologist.

Heying is a Santa Cruz, California native. She received her bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1992. In 2001, she earned her Ph.D. degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Heying was a professor of evolutionary biology at the Evergreen State College, Olympia, Washington, from September 2002 to September 2017. She has researched amphibians, mostly focused on the mating behavior of the poisonous frogs that are endemic to Madagascar and especially the species Mantella laevigata.

Heying resigned along with her husband Bret Weinstein from Evergreen in September 2017 after receiving a $500K settlement from the school. The couple filed a $3.85 million tort claim in July alleging the college failed to "protect its employees from repeated provocative and corrosive verbal and written hostility based on race, as well as threats of physical violence," according to the claim.

Heying is married to Bret Weinstein, who is also an evolutionary biologist. The couple met in Santa Cruz but later moved to Olympia, Washington where both began working and teaching at Evergreen State College.
