Grace Nono is a Filipino singer, known for her musical style based on traditional Filipino rhythms. She is also an ethnomusicologist and cultural worker.
Biography
Nono was born in Agusan, Mindanao. She holds a bachelor's degree in Humanities and a master's degree in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines, and a doctorate in Ethnomusicology from New York University.
Nono released her debut album "Tao Music", described as "rooted in traditional Filipino rhythms and instrumentation but given modern touches", in 1993. She has won the Katha award for Best World Music Album three times.
In 1994, Nono's song "Pinoy Ang Dating" was used as the official jingle of the Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation station I.D.
Nono is executive director of the Tao Foundation for Culture and Arts. She has taught Music and Culture and Philippine Traditional Arts at the University of the Philippines, Local and Oral History at Miriam College, and Women and Shamanisms at the Harvard Divinity School.
