Biography

Giorgos Makaras (Greek: Γιώργος Μακαράς; born June 30, 1966) is a retired Greek professional basketball player.

Professional career

Makaras started his career from his homeland local team Thyella Serron. In 1984–85 season Thyella promoted in the Greek Basket League, and Makaras was one of the headliners of the team. Makaras played for first in the Greek Basket League during 1985–86 season. Despite, the relegation of his club, Makaras tranferred to PAOK in 1986. Makaras played six years for PAOK, and he won the FIBA European Cup Winner's Cup, and the FIBA European Cup Winner's Cup in 1991. He also played in three defeated finals for the Greek Basketball Cup. At the FIBA European Cup Winner's Cup final Makaras despite he end the game scoreless, having four rebounds and had a bravely performance playing like a Center (basketball) for many minuttes.

In 1991 he released from PAOK, and joined to Peristeri B.C. After five years with the Athenian club, he announced his retirement at the age of 31.

Greek national team

Makaras has 15 caps with Greek national basketball team and scoring 103 points. He took part at FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament 1988. He also played in all Greek youth teams.
