Biography

George Shorrock Ashcombe Wheatcroft (29 October 1905 – 2 December 1987) was an English chess master and chess functionary.

Biography

In 1935, George Wheatcroft won British Correspondence chess championship. He participated in international chess tournaments in Plymouth (1938) and Margate (1939). From 1953 to 1956 George Wheatcroft was President of British Chess Federation.

George Wheatcroft played for England in the Chess Olympiad:

  • In 1937, at reserve board in the 7th Chess Olympiad in Stockholm (+4, =1, -8).

George Wheatcroft was lawyer by profession. He graduated from New College in University of Oxford. From 1959 to 1968 he was professor on English law.

His son was Timothy Martin Wheatcroft (January 25, 1934 – June 13, 1987) – chess player, participant of British Chess Championship in 1963 (5½ out of 11, shared 13th – 18th place).
