Biography

George J. Siedel is an American author and professor on the faculty at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, where he is the Williamson Family Professor of Business Administration and the Thurnau Professor of Business Law. He is best known for his research on proactive law, negotiation, alternative dispute resolution, and for his pioneering work in the development of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). 

Education

Siedel received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from the College of Wooster and completed graduate studies in law at the University of Michigan and Cambridge University.

Career

Following graduation from Cambridge University, Siedel worked as an attorney in a professional corporation. He has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and in Florida, Michigan and Ohio.

In 1974 Siedel joined the faculty of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, where he has served as Associate Dean. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Stanford University and Harvard University, a Visiting Scholar at Berkeley, and a Parsons Fellow at the University of Sydney. He has been elected a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University's Wolfson College and a Life Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. As a Fulbright Scholar, he held a Distinguished Chair in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Siedel has served on several boards of directors, including The Washington Campus, the William Davidson Institute, AIESEC, and Medic-Alert.

Siedel has an international reputation for his research and teaching on negotiation. He has taught negotiation around the world, including Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, India, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Luxembourg, and Brazil, and he currently teaches annually in Croatia, and Italy.   

In 2014, he developed a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) on "Successful Negotiation: Essential Strategies and Skills." The course ranked second on a list of the ten most popular business courses, and over 500,000 learners have joined the course. This course was followed in 2016 with a MOOC on "The Three Pillar Model for Business Decisions: Strategy, Law & Ethics."

Siedel is well known for his pragmatic approach on negotiation strategy. This approach is summarized in his book on Negotiating for Success: Essential Strategies and Skills and in numerous media interviews.  He also lectures frequently at professional conferences and at universities in the US and abroad, including Harvard, MIT, Stanford and, most recently, Oxford.

In addition to his expertise on negotiation, Siedel is well known for his work in the fields of proactive law and alternative dispute resolution.  In recognition of this work, he has been named an Honorary Fellow of the Salzburg Center for International Legal Studies. He also served as Special Editor of the Alternative Dispute Resolution issue of the American Business Law Journal.
