Biography

George Parker Scarburgh (February 11, 1806 – December 21, 1879) was a judge of the United States Court of Claims.
Scarburgh read law to enter the Bar, and began his legal career in private practice in Accomack County, Virginia, from 1837 to 1844. He was a judge of the Virginia Third Circuit Superior Court of Law and Chancery from 1844 to 1852, and a professor of law at the College of William & Mary, from 1852 to 1855. Scarburgh was nominated by President Franklin Pierce to a seat on the Court of Claims in 1955, receiving his commission on May 8, 1855. He served until April 11, 1861, returning thereafter to private practice in Halifax County, Virginia, from 1861 to 1865, and in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1865 to 1877. He served as a judge of the Corporation Court of Norfolk, Virginia from 1877 until his death in 1879.
