Biography

George Ernest Bell (November 21, 1883 – November 16, 1970) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1944 to 1963 sitting with the Social Credit caucus in government.

Political career

Bell ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature as a Social Credit candidate in the electoral district of Gleichen for the 1944 Alberta general election. He ran in a hotly contested three way race defeating incumbent Donald McKinnon taking just over half the popular vote.

Bell ran for a second term in the 1948 Alberta general election. He ran in a two way race against Independent candidate Jonathan Wheatley easily defeating him with a near landslide majority to return to office.

The 1952 Alberta general election would see Bell run for his third term in office. He ran for re-election in a three way and despite losing some of his popular vote managed to win easily.

Bell ran for a fourth term in office in the 1955 Alberta general election. He ran in a hotly contested two way race against Liberal candidate Carman Ellis. Bell held his seat defeating Ellis by 128 votes.

Ellis would challenge Bell for the second time in the 1959 Alberta general election. This time Bell would win a landslide majority to earn his fifth term while Ellis finished a distant third place in the three way race.

Bell retired from provincial politics at dissolution of the Assembly in 1963.
