Biography
Georg Jander is an American botanist at the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, based on the Cornell University campus in Ithaca, New York (USA).Jander is known for his molecular research identifying genes for biochemical compounds of ecological and agricultural importance, particularly those plant traits involved in resistance to insect pests. His work to date has resulted in over 10,000 citations by his peers.
Jander currently studies several plant species, including corn (Zea mays), mouse-ear cress (Arabidopsis), wall flowers in the genus Erysimum, and milkweeds in the genus Asclepias.In each plant species, Jander's laboratory uses techniques in biochemical genetics to identify the genetic causes of plant secondary metabolism involved in plant defenses against insects. Among his most cited work are studies of plant immunity to insects, map-based cloning in Arabidopsis, virulence of the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa mutants in mice and insects, myrosinases and glucosinolates, green peach aphids (Myzus persicae), and epigenetic inheritance in plants.
Jander has four children and is married to a gerontologist.
