Quick Facts
Biography
Gavin David Seim (born January 17, 1985) is an American libertarian human rights activist based in Grant County, Washington. He posted a viral, controversial video on the internet, entitled "Citizen Pulls Cop Over." He also organized an "I Will NOT Comply" rally and posted a video about the same subject.
In 2014, he ran, unsuccessfully, for the United States House of Representatives as a Republican.
In 2015, he was arrested for interfering with a court, disorderly conduct, and contempt of court.
Political views
Government abolition
Seim denies being an anarchist, instead calling himself an abolitionist and liberty activist".
Second Amendment
He stated during a 2014 radio interview, "The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution . . . means the government has no authority whatsoever to restrict our guns in any fashion whatsoever. Any gun law, except our Constitution’s, is void, it’s lawless.... If you want to have a bazooka as my neighbor, I don't care.... The people are to be armed—the militia is the people—they are to be armed in order to, if need be, defend themselves against the government."
During a protest in Spokane, Washington in 2014, Seim stated, "The people should be armed equal to the police. If they can have an MRAP [mine-resistant, ambush-protected vehicle], we can have a tank.”
Limited-government militias
In 2016, Seim supported those arrested for the Occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, referring to the limited-federal-government militia members and other armed protesters there as "patriots". He called on their supporters to learn the names of the judges, prosecutors, and marshals, whom he claimed were persecuting those arrested. "On the surface level, these are secret courts," Seim said. "We [sic] got to do something about this." His extremist followers often called for the death of the federal court judge in Oregon, Anna J. Brown. Seim is also anti-military and anti-law enforcement.
Sovereign Citizen Movement
Although some of the limited-federal-government militia members whom Seim supports advocate so-called "Sovereign Citizen" theories, Seim denounced the Sovereign Citizen movement in August 2016, calling it "nonsense".
Justice Reform
On September 1, 2016, regarding a news article reporting the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl by a 51-year-old man, Seim commented, "Stop calling everything rape. Rape is defined by Gods [sic] law, the government does not get to change that."
On September 2, 2016, Seim commented on People v. Turner, the case in which Brock Turner was convicted of sexual assault for having sexually molested an unconscious woman. Turner was caught by two college students who witnessed this, confronted him, and apprehended Turner when he fled. Seim commented, "I don't excuse bad behavior. This young man [Turner] was greatly lacking in character, as was the supposed victim who later regretted her actions and decided it was his fault by default. Brock was never convicted of rape and there was no evidence to it. The lesser charges he was convicted [of] in an unconstitutional court were dubious at best, as both parties were drunk and, the so called 'victim' so much so that she could not even remember what happened. Intercourse never even occurred!"
On April 14, 2017, Seim commented on the case of Jesse Graham Berben, who was sentenced to 100 years in prison for 20 counts of possession of child pornography. Despite the guilty jury verdicts, Seim argued that the child pornography may have been planted, adding, "Imagine what our founders would have said to the idea of a person spending 100 years in a concrete cage because there of [sic] a picture in their drawer. It's a notion utterly absurd to the sane mind."
2014 election
In 2014, Seim ran for the U.S. House of Representatives, to represent Washington state's 4th Congressional District. He ran as a Republican, but used the slogan, "No More Politicians". Seim lost in the primary, receiving 2.56% of the vote, which was 1,462 of the 73,264 votes counted. $7,676.00 was donated to his campaign in total.
"I Will NOT Comply" rally
Seim organized an "I Will NOT Comply" rally which took place in December 2014 in Olympia, Washington. The rally was in protest of Washington State Initiative 594, which had recently passed by a 19-point margin and expanded gun sale background checks to private sales and exchanges.
Seim refused to obtain a permit for the rally, but notified the government of his intent to hold the rally. In response, the government informed him that another pro-gun group was planning a rally for the same day in the same location. Seim responded that he was only informing them of his plans, not asking for authorization.
He intended for the rally to be a civil disobedience event. However, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol stated that openly exchanging guns as the rally intended would not be illegal, since handing a gun to another person would not be considered a "transfer" within the meaning of i594.
Seim spoke at the event, arguing that mass shooting events were caused by gun regulation. While on stage, Seim burned his state concealed weapons permit and said that those who want tanks and bazookas should purchase them.
Ammon Bundy, who had participated in the Bundy standoff (which arose from a dispute between Bundy's father and the United States Bureau of Land Management), was scheduled to speak at the event, but did not show up.
2015 arrest
In 2015, Seim attended the hearing of 19-year-old Tavis Shasteen, who was cited for refusing to provide a driver's license to a police officer when stopped for speeding. Seim insisted on representing Shasteen, but the court would not allow it, since Seim was not an attorney. The court also would not allow him to live-stream the hearing. Seim was subsequently arrested.
Seim was booked into jail for interfering with a court, disorderly conduct, and contempt of court. He was sentenced to 14 days house arrest and 12 months probation.
2016 Libertarian Party of Wisconsin convention
Seim spoke at the 2016 Libertarian Party of Wisconsin Convention, which was held April 16, 2016.
Ties to the Bundy standoff and the Occupation of MNWR
Ammon Bundy participated in the Bundy standoff in 2014 and led armed militants in the Occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in 2016. Bundy was scheduled to speak at the "I Will NOT Comply" event that Seim organized in 2014, but Bundy did not show up.
At the end of the MNWR Occupation in early 2016, Seim hosted live streams of the remaining four occupiers. David Fry, the last remaining occupier, called Seim, who streamed the audio over the internet. Seim urged Fry to peacefully leave the refuge. The FBI eventually negotiated Fry's surrender, ending the standoff.
Seim posted links on his website to numerous fundraiser pages for those arrested for participating in the 2014 Bundy standoff and/or the 2016 MNWR Occupation. He also made various videos supporting those arrested. Additionally, he became an editor of the official Bundy Ranch Facebook page.
