Biography
Fabio Gallia (born 20 August 1963) is an Italian banker. He is Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP). He was also held the post of Vice Chairman of Italian Strategic Fund from 10 September 2015 to March 2016, a fund that was managed by CDP.
Previously Gallia was the Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Banca Nazionale del Lavoro and Country Head for Italy of the BNP Paribas Group, as well as the only Italian member of the Executive Committee.
Career before Capitalia
He began his career in 1988 at consultancy firm Accenture where he worked for two years. Subsequently, between 1990 and 2002, he worked for the Ersel–Giubergia Group, a leading investment and private banking company, where he held a number of top-level roles. In 1996 he was appointed as Chief Investment Officer and in 1999 he was made Partner and general manager.
Career at Capitalia Group
After departing the Ersel-Giubergia Group, he spent five years as a manager of the Capitalia Group. Initially appointed as one of the vice general manager in 2002 (Italian: Vice Direttore Generale) with responsibility for group finance and wealth management, the following year he was promoted as one of the two co-general manager, (Italian: Con-direttore Generale) overseeing the Group's Commercial Policies.
In this period he was also vice chairman of the board of directors of Capitalia Asset Management SGR (a subsidiary of the group) and member of the board of CNP Capitalia Vita (a joint venture of Capitalia). He also served as a member of the board of directors of Mediocredito Centrale from 18 April 2003.
Since 10 September 2003 he was the CEO of Fineco, until the company was absorbed into Capitalia in 2005. In August 2005 he was appointed as the CEO of Banca di Roma (another Capitalia subsidiary), a roles that he covered until 2007 when the merger with the UniCredit Group took place.
Career at BNP Paribas Group
He joined the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro (BNL in short; a BNP Paribas subsidiary in Italy) on 1 January 2008, as the general manager. He was promoted as the chief executive officer (Italian: Amministratore Delegato) on 3 September of the same year. He was also appointed as a member of the executive committee, first not-French, of BNP Paribas S.A. in 2008 (not to be confused with the board of directors). In 2009 BNP Paribas Personal Finance, a BNP Paribas subsidiary, acquired another Italian bank, Findomestic Banca; Gallia was appointed as the chairman (Italian: Presidente) of the board of directors (Italian: Consiglio di Amministrazione) of Findomestic Banca in December 2009. Gallia became the new "Head of Italy" of BNP Paribas on 1 May 2012, which Filippo Boria, who was promoted to the head of the corporate and investment banking division of BNP Paribas in Italy (replacing Nicola D'Anselmo), as well as the head of the Italian branches (Italian: succursale) of BNP Paribas, would report to Thierry Varène (head of BNP Paribas CIB) and Gallia respectively for the two positions.
In addition to his top-level roles within the group, he is a member of the board of directors of the BNL Foundation, a charity organization associated with BNL, as well as BNP Paribas Foundation. Gallia was also appointed by BNP Paribas as a member of the board of directors of Finsoe, a holding company that the bank had a minority interest in. He left the board circa 2012, as BNP Paribas sold all their interests in Finsoe in the same year.
Career at Cassa Depositi e Prestiti
On 13 July 2015 Fabio Gallia was appointed as the CEO of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
Other professional experience
Gallia was a member of the boards of directors of Borsa Italiana, MTS S.p.A., (a electronic fixed income trading market provider) Associazione Bancaria Italiana, Assonime (Association of Italian Joint Stock Companies), Coesia, Ariston Thermo, and Telethon Foundation, as well as member of the steering committee of Assogestioni (the Italian association of asset management companies) and member of the committee of chairmanship of Associazione Civita.
Education
He graduated in 1987 with a degree in Business and Economics from the University of Turin. He has been a Chartered Accountant since 1989.
Honours
In June 2013 Fabio Gallia was made “Chevalier” of the National Order of Legion of Honour of France.
In May 2015 Fabio Gallia was appointed Knight of Labour of the Italian Republic.
