Early life

Eva Mendes was born as Eva de la Caridad Mendez, on March 5, 1974, in Miami, Florida, to Cuban parents Eva Perez Suarez and Juan Carlos Mendez. Her mother worked at Mann's Chinese Theatre and later for an aerospace company, and her father ran a meat distribution business. She was raised by her mother in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale after her parents' divorce.

Mendes was raised a Roman Catholic and at one time even considered becoming a Catholic nun. She has two brothers, Juan Carlos (1963–2016, died from throat cancer) and Carlo, and a sister, Janet. She attended Hoover High School in Glendale, California, and later studied marketing at California State University, Northridge, but left college to pursue acting under Ivana Chubbuck.

Career

Acting

Mendes began her acting career after a talent manager saw her photo in a friend's portfolio. She made her film debut playing the role of "Kir" in Ethan Wiley's direct-to-video Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror. She was disappointed in her performance and she hired an acting coach and subsequently was seen in the roles of a bridesmaid in the comedy A Night at the Roxbury (1998), with Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan, a housekeeper in the fantasy family film My Brother the Pig (1999), with Scarlett Johansson, and that of an ill-fated film student in the slasher film Urban Legends: Final Cut (2000).

In 2001, she was seen as "Trish" in Andrzej Bartkowiak's Exit Wounds, starring Steven SeagalDMX, and Isaiah Washington.

Mendes' breakthrough role came when she appeared in Antoine Fuqua's crime thriller Training Day (2001), alongside Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. She described her role as "pivotal" in her career, stating that it motivated her to keep going as an actress, as she was "bored" doing "terrible cheesy horrible" films before she obtained it. The success of Training Day led to roles in All About the Benjamins, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Once Upon a Time in Mexico (which earned her a nomination at the Teen Choice Awards), Out of Time, and Stuck on You. She was the female lead in the 2005 film Hitch, making her one of the first minority actors to play the lead in a hit romantic comedy. Mendes subsequently starred in The Wendell Baker Story, Guilty Hearts, Trust the Man, Ghost Rider, We Own the Night, Live!, and Cleaner.

In 2008, Mendes was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for her performance in the all-female comedy film The Women. Mendes then appeared in The Spirit, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, The Other Guys, Last Night, Fast Five, and a spoof short film for Funny or Die. In 2012, she visited Sierra Leone and was featured in the PBS documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide (aired in October 2012).

In 2012, she starred as "Romina" in Derek Cianfrance's crime drama film The Place Beyond the Pines, opposite Ryan Gosling. Entertainment Weekly describing her performance as "quietly heartbreaking". The following year, she appeared in the HBO comedy film Clear History.
