Biography

Eugene W. Ferris (November 18, 1841 to February 26, 1907) was an American soldier who fought in the American Civil War. Ferris received the country's highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor, for his action Berryville in Virginia on 1 April 1865. He was honored with the award on 16 October 1897.

Biography

Ferris was born in Springfield, Vermont on 18 November 1841. He joined the 30th Massachusetts Infantry from Lowell, Massachusetts in January 1862, and was commissioned as an officer the following August. He briefly served as regimental adjutant from February to April 1865, and mustered out with his regiment in December 1865.Ferris died on 26 February 1907 and his remains are interred at Rockville Cemetery in Rockville, Indiana.

Medal of Honor citation

Accompanied only by an orderly, outside the lines of the Army, he gallantly resisted an attack of 5 of Mosby's cavalry, mortally wounded the leader of the party, seized his horse and pistols, wounded 3 more, and, though wounded himself, escaped.
