Biography

Emma Alberici (born 1970) is an Australian television journalist is currently the presenter of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's flagship current affairs program, Lateline.

As a television presenter for over twenty years, she has a strong reputation for independence and integrity. Her earlier ABC roles were as a finance reporter on The 7.30 Report, presenter of the now defunct Business Breakfast, the ABC's Europe correspondent, and as the general finance reporter for ABC TV and Radio. Previously she was a reporter and producer with A Current Affair on Australia's Nine Network.

Early life and background

Emma Alberici was born to Franco (from Boretto near Milan), a cabinetmaker who worked at the Victoria Market, and Anna Alberici (from the island of Ischia, off Naples). Her parents are Italian immigrants who arrived in Australia by passenger liner in 1955. The family settled in Melbourne, where Alberici attended Our Lady of Mercy College in Heidelberg, Victoria. She later studied Journalism and Economics at Deakin University. At Melbourne University, Alberici completed a BA in Italian.

Career

Her journalistic career began as cadet with the Melbourne tabloid Herald Sun. She also helped create "The Small Business Show" at the Nine Network.

Alberici has twice been a finalist in the Walkley Awards for journalism. Both nominations were for investigative reports, the first being her report on the death of a patron at Star City Casino in 1998. It was Alberici's reports surrounding that event, including exclusive interviews with witnesses, family and friends, that prompted a police integrity commission inquiry.

She authored The Small Business Book which became a high selling volume.

Lateline

Alberici began hosting the ABC's flagship current affairs program Lateline in 2012, when she replaced Ali Moore. She co-hosts alongside Tony Jones.

Lateline has developed a reputation for setting the agenda when it comes to Australian news and is well known for featuring head-to-head debates on current issues and hard hitting political interviews.

The program has been labelled by the influential Crikey magazine as being, "an unmissable current affairs program that almost certainly creates more headlines in the next day's newspapers than any other TV show in the country."

Emma Alberici is taking long service leave but will return on May 1.

Personal life

Alberici has been married to Jason McCauley, a sound recordist who once worked for 60 Minutes, since 2003. They have three children and reside in Sydney.

She is fluent in Italian, which helped her cover various Foreign Correspondent reports about the exploits of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Alberici has also lived in London, England where she was based as the ABC's Europe Correspondent.
