Biography

Edwin DeHaven Steel, Jr. (May 7, 1904 – July 26, 1986) was a United States federal judge.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Steel received an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1926. He received an LL.B. from Yale Law School in 1931. He was in private practice in Wilmington, Delaware from 1931 to 1958. He was a General counsel, War Materials, Inc. in 1942.
Steel was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. Steel was nominated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on March 26, 1958, to a seat vacated by Paul C. Leahy. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 22, 1958, and received his commission on April 23, 1958. He assumed senior status on December 30, 1969. Steel served in that capacity until his death.
