Edith Bolling Galt Wilson

Edith Bolling Galt Wilson was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson. She served as the First Lady of the United States from 1915 to 1921.

During her time as First Lady, Edith Wilson played an active role in assisting her husband in his duties as president. After President Wilson suffered a stroke in 1919, she effectively took over many of his responsibilities and served as his intermediary with government officials and advisors.

Following her husband's stroke, Edith Wilson filtered his correspondence, determined which matters required his attention, and made decisions on his behalf. She would then inform the President of these decisions and he would sign off on them. This arrangement was kept a secret, and she effectively acted as the de facto president for the remainder of Woodrow Wilson's second term.

Before becoming First Lady, Edith Wilson was involved in grassroots activities and served as the head of numerous women's organizations. However, she did not have a prominent role in politics until her marriage to Woodrow Wilson.

After leaving the White House, Edith Wilson continued to advocate for causes such as veterans' rights and women's suffrage. She also authored several books, including a memoir titled "My Memoir," which provided insights into her time as First Lady and her role in assisting her husband during his presidency.
