Eddie Walsh (police official)
Quick Facts
Biography
Eddie Walsh (born 1924) is a former Boston police official who, along with FBI agent Dennis Condon and U.S. House Speaker John William McCormack, helped John "Zip" Connolly become an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation who would later be the "handler" of mobster James "Whitey" Bulger during the 1970s and 80s.
In 1998, Walsh made a controversial statement during an interview with journalist Mike Barnicle in which he stated former hitman turned government informant John Martorano "..practically used black people in Roxbury for target practice” in reference to the gangland slayings of several witnesses in the area during the late 1960s. However, Walsh's remarks caused the U.S. District Attorney to criticize Walsh claiming his statement to be “madness”. Barnicle, who has had a long history of fabricating and exaggerating stories, offered his resignation as a columnist for the Boston Globe soon after.
