Biography
Ed Gold (born London, 15 June 1969) is a British documentary photographerknown for exploring and documenting some of the world’s most remote communities. He grew up in Essex and Istanbul before later moving to Wales.
Gold’s work is frequently featured on the BBC and has also been presented in exhibitions as far away as Puerto Madryn, Argentina.
When Gold documents a particular group of people, he embeds himself within their community for long durations, sometimes for up to two and a half years.
Some of the off-grid societies in which he has lived and worked include Welsh Patagonia,the 2nd Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 Para), both at their base in Colchester and on the ground in Afghanistan, and the Atchley family, who live in a remote area of Alaska with no contact with the outside world apart from when they visit town once a year.
Gold has also spent time living amongst the Iñupiat people in Wales, Alaska, has documented Harley-Davidson enthusiasts at the House of Harley in Anchorage, the US Army at the Northern Warfare Training Center in Alaska and more.
Ed Gold took his first photograph at the age of eight and has been carrying a camera ever since. He never formally studied photography.
He holds a B/TEC National Diploma in Graphic Design from the Colchester Institute, a BA Hons in Design from the Colchester Institute, and an MA in Interactive Multimedia from Central Saint Martins. It was in 2001 that Gold began taking photographs full-timeand he has since chosen to forego a home base to live amongst the communities he documents in some of the most unique and isolated places inhabited by mankind.
His main source of income comes from the BBC with whom he frequently works on photography projects.
Gold currently has an exhibition of his work at Firstsite in Colchester, Essex.
