Quick Facts
Biography
The deys of Tunis (Arabic: داي تونس, Turkish: Dayı) is the military commander of the regency of Tunis, elected by the diwan or council of the Ottoman militia of Tunis, from 1591 to the disappearance of this function with the gradual takeover of the Mouradite beys. However, the deys were marginalized little by little, but they remained at the forefront of the uprisings by the army, and many of them often ended in death.

History
In 1591, the body of the Janissaries under the direction of junior officers in Tunisia raised a rebellion and cut the bulukbasha, which make up the sofa under the Ottoman pasha. Forty virgins chose one to command the army. This dey became de facto the head of government and the position of pasha became nominal. The pasha retained a symbolic power and remained considered as vassals of the Ottoman sultan.
