Biography

Denis-Émery Papineau (December 26, 1819 – January 6, 1899) was a Quebec notary and political figure.
He was born in Montreal in 1819, the son of Denis-Benjamin Papineau. He studied at Saint-Hyacinthe, qualified as a notary in 1841 and entered practice in Montreal. Around 1843, he was named notary for the city of Montreal. He helped found the Revue canadienne, the newspaper L'Avenir and the daily Le Pays. He helped establish the Banque Ville-Marie and served as its first president. Papineau was a member of the Montreal Annexation Association, which advocated annexation to the United States, and served as a vice-president for that organization. In 1858, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada for Ottawa County. He helped establish a provincial association for notaries and served as its president from 1876 to 1879. He died in Montreal in 1899 (some sources say 1898) and was buried in the Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery.
