Biography

Dee Lampton (October 6, 1898 – September 2, 1919) was an American film actor and comedian of the silent era. He is best remembered for his longstanding association with Mack SennettHarold Lloyd, and Hal Roach.

Early life

Dee Lampton was born on October 6, 1898, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Career

In his short career spanning around 5 years, Lampton appeared in 59 silent films (12 uncredited). A heavyset character of around 300lbs, he was one of the regulars in the Hal Roach crew of actors and was seen in several of his film productions. 

Lampton made his acting debut in 1915, appearing in Hal Roach's Fun at a Ball Game, starring Jules Mendel and Margie Reiger. The same year, he was seen in an uncredited role in Charlie Chaplin's comedy film A Night in the Show.

The following year, in 1916, Lampton was seen in 9 of Hal Roach's "Luke" comedy series:  Luke Rides Roughshod; Luke, Crystal Gazer; Luke's Lost Lamb; Luke Does the Midway; Luke Joins the Navy; Luke and the Mermaids; Luke's Speedy Club Life; Luke and the Bang-Tails; and Luke, Patient Provider. Besides Lampton playing "Lonesome Luke," the leading cast of the films included Roach's by-then familiar team of Harold Lloyd'Snub' PollardBebe DanielsBud Jamison, and Charles Stevenson, among others.

1917 kept Lampton busy with the "Schemer Skinny" character in Roach's "Skinny" series of films such as Schemer Skinny's Schemes, Skinny's Love Tangle, Skinny Routs a Robber, Skinny's Shipwrecked Sand-Witch, and Skinny's False Alarm. 

Lampton's last nine films – including Don't Shove, The Rajah, Pay Your Dues, and Haunted Spooks – were released posthumously after he died September 2, 1919.

Death

Dee Lampton died of appendicitis at the age of 20 on September 2, 1919,  at the Clara Barton Hospital in Los Angeles, California. He was survived by his father and mother, a sister and a brother.
