Biography
David Smith (born around 1980) is a Canadian-born Brooklyn-based jazz trumpeter.
Education
Smith started his professional career in Toronto and in 2000, he moved to New York City on a Canada Council for the Arts grant. He graduated with a Master of Arts in Jazz Performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. Since then, he has established himself as a fixture on the New York City jazz scene.
Career
In 2005, he released his debut album Circumstance (with Fresh Sound Records label) with his own compositions, on which Seamus Blake, Nate Radley, David Ephross, and Mark Ferber participated. Later, he released two more albums: Anticipation(featuring Kenji Omae, Nate Radley, Gary Wang, and Greg Ritchie) and Impetus(featuring Dan Pratt, Nate Radley, Gary Wang, and Anthony Pinciotti). Both albums were recorded with the Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records label.
He has also appeared as a sideman on over sixty recordings, including for Harry Connick, Jr., Glen Hansard, Alan Ferber (including his Grammy-nominated March Sublime), Jon Gordon, Tom Jones, Arturo O'Farrill's Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and among many others.
Over the years, from 2005 to 2012, he has been involved in 16 recording sessions and has collaborated with such jazz musicians as Allan Mednard, Ugonna Okegwo, John Hollenbeck, Kenny Wright, Dan Pugach Nonet, Cecilia Coleman, Russ Spiegel, Thomson Kneeland, Kim Bock, Howard Britz, Roberta Piket and the New York Jazz Initiative (Album Mad About Thad, 2011) with Sam Burtis, Steve Wilson, Ralph LaLama, and Eric McPherson among others)
Smith currently leads a quintet comprising saxophonist Dan Pratt, guitarist Nate Radley, bassist Gary Wang, and drummer Anthony Pinciotti.
Additionally, he is an Artist-Teacher in trumpet at the Hartt School, University of Hartford, and an adjunct faculty member at the College of Staten Island, CUNY.
