Amos Darryl Wimberley (born December 19, 1949 in St. Augustine, Florida) is an American writer.
Education
Having completed his secondary education at Lafayette County High School, Mayo, Florida, Wimberley entered the United States Air Force Academy, Colorado, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in International Affairs. While still on active duty he completed graduate work at St. Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas, and was awarded a Master of Arts in English Literature.
Upon separation from military service he entered the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin where he completed a Doctorate of Philosophy from the Radio-Television-Film department.
Early Years and Career
Darryl Wimberley was born on Dec. 19, 1949 in St. Augustine, Florida. He was born 39 hours before his twin Edward Terrell Wimberley. Darryl is the son of Amos Edward Wimberley and Vern Lamonice Wimberley. He has a younger brother David Merrill Wimberley. Darryl's twin is a professor and a Presbyterian minister and his younger brother is a CPA and assistant superintendent of schools in Leon County Florida. Darryl's father was a school teacher and Baptist minister. Darryl principally grew up in Hastings, Florida and Mayo, Florida.
Darryl was a football star in high school, attending Lafayette High School in Mayo, Florida. He was recognized for his academic and football prowess in his senior winning a regional prize, the Shad Bryant Award. Darryl left for the Air Force Academy while his brothers (his twin and Merrill) attended Stetson University. Darryl's parents did not support his education beyond high school and his subsequent achievements at the U.S.Air Force Academy (B.S.), St. Mary's University (M.A.) and the University of Texas at Austin (Ph.D.) are largely the product of his determination, grit and perseverance which is to say he is largely a self-created man. In 1969 Darryl lost his mother Vern and in 2014 his father Edward died at 95. Darryl has two children, one of whom is a graduate of Harvard and George Washington Universities who is trained as a physicians assistant and a son who is a physicist trained at Boston College and the University of Maryland. Darryl's wife is a Vice President at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas and is prominent in the Austin community.
Darryl's work career beyond his six years service in the U.S.Air Force as an intelligence officer includes working asAssistant Regional Manager for a four-state region of cable television systems owned by Communications Properties, Inc., of the Times-Mirror Corporation. He returned to Austin to write. Wimberley has five novels with St. Martin's Press in the Barrett Raines mystery series: A Rock and a Hard Place (1999), Dead Man's Bay (2000), Strawman's Hammock (2001) Pepperfish Keys (2007), and "Devil's Slew" (2011). A separate, literary work, A Tinker's Damn, was published in 2000 by MacMurray and Beck and won a Foreword Magazine Award for Best Literary Novel from independent publishers; another literary novel, The King of Colored Town, was published in 2007 by The Toby Press. That novel won the first Willie Morris Award for Fiction in 2008.His script Kaleidoscope was Grand Prize Winner for Fade In: Magazines 1998 competition; the novel "Kaleidoscope" based on that script was published by The Toby Press, 2008.
Wimberley has taught writing and literature at several institutions including the Radio/Television/Film Department at the University of Texas, Austin and the Department of English and Fine Arts at his alma mater, the United States Air Force Academy.
Wimberley is married to Doris Constantine, Director of Financial Aid at St. Edward's University in Austin. His children are accomplished professionals living in the Northeast and the Southwest.
