Biography

Curtis Hill is an American prosecutor who is the 43rd Attorney General of Indiana. He defeated his opponent Lorenzo Arredondo on November 8, 2016, with 61.94% to 38.06% of the vote. The 1,643,689 ballots cast for Hill, a Republican, made him the top vote-getter of any elected official in Indiana history. He took office on January 9, 2017.

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana, Hill is the fifth and youngest child of Curtis T. Hill, Sr., and Eleanor M. Hill. After graduating from Elkhart Central High School, he earned both his bachelor’s and law degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington. He began his legal career as a part-time deputy prosecuting attorney for Elkhart County and also maintained a private law practice.

Legal career

Starting in 2002, Hill was elected to four terms as the Elkhart County prosecutor in Northern Indiana. Early in his tenure, he transformed Indiana’s largest part-time prosecuting attorney’s office into a full-time office. Hill gained a reputation for taking a hard line against criminal defendants, but he also supported creative programs enabling certain defendants charged with less serious and nonviolent crimes to avoid incarceration.

Hill has testified before Congress on “Methamphetamine in the Heartland” and served as a presenter for the Northern Indiana Methamphetamine Summit, sponsored by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, Executive Office of the President of the United States.

Running to become Indiana Attorney General in 2016, Hill pledged to emphasize four priorities – rolling back federal overreach; protecting families from drugs and violent crime; safeguarding consumers from fraud and scams; and inspiring youth to pursue meaningful lives.

Personal

Hill and his wife, Teresa, have five children.

He has performed on stage in a variety of local community theater productions, including recurring roles as the king of Siam in “The King and I.” Among some of his other credits, Hill has been cast in “Guys and Dolls,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” “The Jungle Book” and “A Christmas Carol” (in which he portrayed the ghost of Jacob Marley).

Hill is a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a black belt in Hapkido.

Professional Affiliations

Hill has served as a member of the Board of Governors for the Indiana State Bar Association; Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving (past chairman); Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (past trustee); and Board of Regents for the National College of District Attorneys. Further, he has served as a board member for the Better Business Bureau; Elkhart County Historical Society; Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce; and Boys and Girls Club of Elkhart County.

Hill also has been a member of the Association of Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Inc. (past president); Indiana Prosecuting Attorney’s Council (IPAC) Ethics Committee; National District Attorneys Association (former vice president); FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division Advisory Policy Board and State Board of Law Examiners Character and Fitness Committee. Hill also is a trustee of The Nature Conservancy Indiana Chapter and a life member of the NAACP.
