Biography

Claire Bernard (born February 3, 1977) is an American philanthropist and writer. She is president and a trustee of the Mariposa Foundation, trustee of the Natural Resources Defense Council and is a contributor to Vanity Fair, Vogue, and the Huffington Post.

Bernard devotes much of her time to furthering the Mariposa Foundation's mission and is an advocate for humanitarian and environmental issues in addition to bringing attention to New York City organizations focusing on social services in the city. Bernard is a Resident Philanthropist for Vanity Fair contributing to the magazines columns One-Click Tip of the Day and Do-Gooder Tip of the Day, using the platform to help raise awareness and build support for philanthropic issues. She serves on the International Rescue Committee's Children's Committee, the Global Fund for Women's Philanthropy Committee, and has spent many years fundraising for the American Museum of Natural History. Additionally, she is an Oxfam GB ambassador and serves on the advisory board of Narrative Magazine. Bernard holds BAs in Art History, Art-Semiotics, and Modern Culture and Media from Brown University and received her MFA in fiction writing from Columbia University.

Early life

Claire Bernard was born in New York City, New York. Bernard's grandfather was Herbert C. Bernard, owner of a successful manufacturing company who served as the longest-serving trustee of Congregation Emanu-El and served as trustee emeritus of Montefiore Health System.

Philanthropy

From 1999 to 2000 Bernard was the co-founder and managing director of CharitableMe.org, a nonprofit, online organization that utilized the community-building power of the Internet to facilitate relationships between donors and nonprofits. Primarily focusing on facilitating in-kind donations, the site was an electronic exchange, matching the charitable contributions and volunteer opportunities from donors with the specific needs of charities. In 2003, she became vice president of the Mariposa Foundation, a private family foundation working to fund organizations in four specific areas: environmental, with a focus on national policy; humanitarian, focusing on disaster relief and water and sanitation; New York City, with a focus on social services and education and Hurricane Sandy recovery; and New Orleans, supporting the recovery from Hurricane Katrina and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Bernard was in charge of the foundation's grant making and operations, as well as the endowment's investments. Bernard's has conducted site visits to countries around the world for her grantees, including nations such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, and Bangladesh. In 2014, Bernard became president of the foundation, a position she currently holds.
