Quick Facts
Biography
Chris Sherwin (born Christopher M. Sherwin 1962–July 18, 2017) was a veterinary biologist and researcher. He was born in Bradford, England and grew up in Australia. He attended Murdoch University in Perth, Australia where he earned his BSc (Hons) and PhD in the study of social and thermal influences on shading behaviour in sheep. His most influential research was on the behaviour and welfare of laboratory mice. He also studied housing for poultry used for meat and egg production, and the effects of lighting on turkey welfare. He conducted extensive studies on enriched laboratory cage design for mice, showing that mice kept in ordinary cages choose to drink more of an anxiety-reducing drug and mice housed in cages with benefits such as access to other mice, the ability to burrow and a variety of bedding materials, for which he was awarded a Hume Research Fellowship in 2001 for his work at Bristol University, where he worked until he retired in 2012. He was noted for his work developing ethical guidelines on animal use for academic societies.
