Biography

Sir Charles Montagu (c 1564 – 11 September 1625) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1614 to 1625.
Montagu was the son of Sir Edward Montagu and his wife Elizabeth Harrington, daughter of James Harington of Exton, Rutland. He was knighted at York on 18 April 1603.
He was elected Member of Parliament for Harwich in 1614, after Sir Robert Mansell was elected for two constituencies, and chose to sit for another. Montagu sat until 1620.
In 1621, he was elected MP for Higham Ferrers. He was re-elected MP for Higham Ferrers in 1624 and 1625.
Montagu died at the age of 61 and was buried at St Margaret's Church, Barking where there is a monument in relief depicting Montagu sitting in a tent.
Montagu married Mary Whitmore, daughter of Sir William Whitmore and had three daughters. One daughter, Anne Montagu married Dudley North, 4th Baron North.
