Catherine Gfeller

Catherine Gfeller (born in 1966 is a Swiss photographer and videographer living in Paris, France.

Gfeller was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. She completed a Master in Fine Arts degree in 1991 at the Universities of Neuchâtel and Lausanne.

Gfeller traveled to the United States and several other countries photographing landscapes; she created a series of large triptychs on landscape, titled “A Matter of Landscape”. In 1995, After receiving agrant for a one-year residency in New York, she created photographic artworks on the theme of urban landscape, which she called "Urban Friezes", using a printing technique which combined paper, monoprint and photography.

In 1999 she left New York and took up a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. That year she received the Photography Award from the HSBC Foundation. After spending time in Paris, she created a new work. “Multi-Compositions”, focused on urban subjects and using various media: video, sound, the written word and radio production.

More recently, she has created several collections involving more subdued urban subjects, “The Insiders”, “Chimeras”, “Domestic Pieces”, and “Spells”.

Gfeller has exhibited extensively in Switzerland, France, Italy, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Argentina, Chili, Canada and the United States. Her work has been added to private and public collections in several countries. She has participated in ArtBasel, Kunst Zurich, Armory Show, la Fiac, Paris Photo, Ljubjana Biennale and Art Bruxelles.

In 2015 Gfeller began a year-long display of her work at the Paul Klee Centre in Bern, Switzerland. In 2016 she contributed a video installation to an exhibition honouring Maximilien de Meuron in Neuchâtel.
