C. D. Deshpande

Chandrashekhar Dhundiraj Deshpande (14 January 1912 – 14 November 1999), popularly known as C. D. Deshpande, was a noted Indian author, geographer, educationist, and teacher. An academic innovator, he workedonmanyfrontstoimprovethe statusofGeography asanindependentscienceanddiscipline in India.Forthispurpose,hegathered ideasfromtheprincipalcentresofgeographicalteachingandresearchintheUnitedKingdom.His workinthe field of Geography maybedividedintothreespheres -schools,universities,andgeographical societies.Deshpandemadevigorouseffortsfortheteachingofgeographyinschoolsandcollegesin Maharashtra.Helaidparticularstressonthenatureofthesubject.Deshpande'sownpersonalefforts werealsocrucialintheestablishmentofanindependentdepartmentofgeographyattheUniversity ofBombay.Heraisedthequestionoffoundingan All-Indiageographical Organization,andeffortsinthatdirectionledtotheestablishmentoftheNationalAssociationof Geographers,India.

Deshpande was born in a Marathi-speaking Deshastha Rigvedi Brahmin family of Sanskrit scholars on 14 January 1912 in Kolhapur, a city in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. He studied economics, politics, and history as his basic subjects for his degree in the University of Mumbai. Subsequently, he did a diploma in geography from the University of California.
