Biography

Burkhard (fl903-915) was from 903 to 915 the 14th Bishop of Passau.

Burkhard was at first the head of the Altötting Abbey and became the year 903 Passau bishop. In the same year he called a diocesan synod.

On the 8th of September, 903, Burkhard reported to the Passau church the donation of measuring instruments and some books of his Chorbischofs Madalwin. This document is the earliest document of a Passau bishop and is therefore regarded as the first Passau bishop's certificate.

In 907 he supported the campaign of King Ludwig and Luitpold, Margrave of Bavaria against the Hungarians. Burkhard accompanied the king to Enns. When the two men received the news of the defeat at the Battle of Pressburg (July 6, 907) and Luitpold's death, Burkhard fled with the king to Passau.
