Quick Facts
Biography
Bruce Smith Lieberman (born 1966) is an American paleontologist and evolutionary biologist interested in macroevolution and the evolutionary history of invertebrates. He currently teaches Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas.
Lieberman studied at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, (A.B. in Geological Sciences, Summa Cum Laude, 1988) and then attended Columbia University, New York, from where he obtained his M.A. in 1991 and a Ph.D. in 1994 (with advisor Niles Eldredge). As a post-doctoral student, he was with Elisabeth Vrba at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, (1994-95) and with Andrew H. Knoll at Harvard University (1996-98).
After finishing his education, Lieberman began teaching at the University of Kansas in 1998. In 2002, he became an Associate Professor, and in 2007, a full professor.
His research interests are:
- Invertebrate paleontology
- Macroevolution
- Paleobiology
- Biogeography
- Phylogenetics
Lieberman also serves as a Senior Curator at Division of Invertebrate Paleontology, Biodiversity Institute, University of Kansas.
