Biography

Brandon Cedel is an American bass-baritone singer.

Early life and education

Cedel was born in South Carolina. He grew up in Hershey, Pennsylvania where he attended Curtis Institute of Music where he was under guidance from Marlena Malas until he graduated from it in 2013.

Career

Brandon Cedel debuted on stage in 2013 as Watchman in Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Metropolitan Opera and year later appeared as Masetto in Don Giovanni at Glyndebourne. In 2015 he performed Riccardo Primo at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and next year he appeared as Figaro, a character from The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at Castleton and Munich Festivals. That year, he also sung Colline in Boston and Teseo in Geneva.

From 2016 to 2017 he was a part of the Oper Frankfurt ensemble with which he performed such roles in plays as Argante in Rinaldo, Prisoner in From the House of the Dead, Dio in Il Serpente di Bronzo, Ariodate in Serse, Achior in Betulia liberata, and the bass-baritone part in a new commission titled A Wintery Spring composed by Saed Haddad. While with Oper Frankfurt, Mr. Cedel also sang as Masetto in Don Giovanni, Donner in Das Rheingold and Lieutenant Ratcliffe in Billy Budd.

During the 2018 to 2019 season, he played such roles as a Speaker in The Magic Flute, Angelotti in Tosca, Brander in La damnation de Faust, Giovanni in Il corsaro, and the Messenger in Oedipus Rex. The same season he also appeared in The Rape of Lucretia with Boston Lyric Opera and as Colline in La bohème with Canadian Opera Company. He also returned to Metropolitan Opera as Masetto in Don Giovanni, and Argante in Rinaldo at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

Some of his memorable roles during the 2018/2019 season were his appearance as a Porter in Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District which was conducted by James Conlon and as Flemish Deputy in Hytner's production of Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlos under baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. His other performances include an appearance with BBC Philharmonic where he sang Songfest, under a baton of David Charles Abel as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Russian National Orchestra under Vladimir Jurowski's baton at the Festival Napa Valley and the role of Panthée in Les Troyens.
