Biography
Boyde Hood (born August 18, 1939) is an American classical trumpet player, session musician, and teacher.
Active since the early 1960s, he has worked with many famed orchestras and conductors and composed music for several movies. He has taught music at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles; Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana; and the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Education
Boyde Hood was born Boyde Wyatt Hood in Dallas, Texas, on August 18, 1939. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance from the Eastman School of Music, Rochester, New York, (1963) and his Master of Music degree in theory and composition from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana.
Career
After completing his education, Hood made a few recordings with the Eastman Wind Ensemble conducted by Frederick Fennell and the Eastman Philharmonia conducted by Howard Hanson:

On July 17, 1964, Hood played trumpet on Johann Sebastian Bach's symphonies at the Festival Concert VII at Marlboro School of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With him were trumpeter William Super, hornist Myron Bloom, trombonist Ralph Sauer, and tuba player Edmund Moore.
Hood played with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra from 1979-82. In December 1980, he played on George Frideric Handel tribute performance, The Water Music (Complete) Of George Frideric Handel, conducted by Gerard Schwarz, at the Bridges Auditorium, Clearmont, California. His trumpet was accompanied by Sue Ranney(bass); Kenneth Munday (bassoon); Douglas Davis (cello); David Shostac (flute); Patricia Mabee (harpsichord); Robin Graham (horn); Allan Vogel (oboe); Janet Lakatos (viola); Paul Shure, Bonnie Douglas, and Ilkka Talvi (violin).
In December 1979, Hood played trumpet on four tracks of the "Future" section of Frank Sinatra's Trilogy: Past Present Future at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The "Future" section was arranged by Gordon Jenkins. The album was released in March 1980 through Reprise Records. He also played on The Carpenters' 1979 Christmas television special A Christmas Portrait.
In 1980, Hood joined the music faculty at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
From January 1982 to 2010, Hood was a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and performed regularly with the Philharmonic's New Music Group/Green Umbrella and the Philharmonic Brass Trio. On May 1, 1990, he performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Royce Hall, University of Southern California, Los Angeles. In the orchestra conducted by John Harbison and André Previn, Hood played trumpet (brass choir II) in the "Concerto For Double Brass Choir And Orchestra" section (tracks 6-8) alongside Jeffrey Reynolds (bass trombone); Ralph Sauer and Byron Peebles (trombone); Norman Pearson (tuba); Donald Green, Rob Roy McGregor, and Thomas Stevens (trumpet); Robert Lee Watt, William Lane, Carol Drake, and Jerry Folsom (horn). The live recording, The Flight Into Egypt, is available on New World Records.
On March 6, 1992, he appeared with the L.A. Philharmonic Ensemble as part of the South Bay Chamber Music Society, Inc.'s series of concerts, in a program that featured famed Russian composer Igor Stravinsky's "L'Histoire du Soldat". While with the L.A. Philharmonic, he also performed and recorded extensively with Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen and Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini.
Hood has played principal trumpet for the Marlboro Festival Orchestra, Victoria Symphony (British Columbia, Canada), Muncie Symphony, CBC Vancouver Symphony, American Ballet Theater, Pasadena Symphony, Victoria Symphony Royal Ballet, and Hollywood Bowl. In 2007, he was on Phideaux Xavier's sixth studio album Doomsday Afternoon.
He has been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, and Milwaukee Symphony. He has also performed with Zubin Mehta and Pierre Boulez.
In 2003, Hood performed at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland.
As a conductor, he has led the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute Orchestra brass musicians, the University of Southern California Brass Ensemble, and the Eastman School of Music Brass Guild.
Teaching
In 1980, Hood joined the music faculty at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He has also taught at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, and the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Since retiring from the University of Southern California, he has continued to teach privately from his home.
